Well, since Dachshunds are so hard to house train, I'd get one that already is trained. Just my opinion.

Yeah, smaller dogs can be more difficult to housetrain, and papertraining can lead to housetraining problems later on. If it's a first time thing for you, I'd strongly recommend not going with a puppy, just because it can be incredibly overwhelming if you've not had any dog experience, or even if you have! Why not look into a young adult or adult? They often come already housetrained, so you can spend more time loving your dog and less time worrying about it having accidents in the house.

I'm not sure where in Ohio you are, but here's some Dachshund rescues that would be a great place to start looking:

and
http://www.k9rescue.com/

Alternatively, you can search pet finder (http://petfinder.org/) for dachshunds near you needing homes.

Most importantly, avoid at all costs buying one from a puppymill, backyard breeder, or petstore, as dogs from these sorts of places are at really high risk for having terrible and/or costly health conditions, and temperament problems. Besides rescues and the like, idealy, you should be going with a reputable breeder who does health testing, and preferably titling on their dogs, and sometimes, breeders will have older puppyies or adults that are already housetrained (and manner trained) that they are letting go.

If you choose not to go with a rescue, then if you'd like, you can message me and I could try and help you track down some reputable breeders to look at.

Good luck!
